My biggest piece of advice for deciding what to wear for your portraits is to be yourself and dress like yourself! Here are a few tips to help you decide what to wear as you think through your outfit selections:
Consider Style:
I suggest one or two sets of outfits (maybe one casual and one dressy/trendy) that is well coordinated for everyone in the photo. If you bring an outfit change, just know that there may not always be a convenient place for changing. For children, please be sure they are comfortable in their outfit.
Consider Color:
Saturated colors (greens, blues, reds, purples, oranges and yellows) photograph beautifully. I don’t recommend solid white because it tends to wash a lot of people out. Think about how what you wear could complement your home décor and how your outfit selection will look against the session location.
When trying to put together outfits for larger groups, try to coordinate, not match. Pick a few colors and mix them all in. Then pick one bold color and weave it throughout your family’s outfits to tie it all together.
Consider Interest:
Layers and accessories have the power to add a lot of interest, and can change your look quickly by adding or removing them. Incorporate hats, scarves, belts, jackets, vests, leggings, statement jewelry, ties, loose sweaters, boots, high heels, etc.
